I had a lovely summer traveling to the gorgeous Maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Lots of (bloody expensive, but delicious) lobster was eaten and I learned that my favourite ice cream shop in Banff (Cows) originated in PEI, so I was in heaven!

Right now, I’m teaching my beloved Game Programming course at John Abbott College while battling in my mind what it means to be a software developer in the age of AI. I’m very lucky to also be teaching the Pedagogy of Digital Learning course at the University of Sherbrooke where I teach teachers how to better integrate technology in their classrooms. I’m leveraging my experience here by also starting an AI Faculty Learning Community at JAC where I get to help teachers develop assessments, instruction strategies, and policies, all considering generative AI. I’m a SALTISE fellow this year where I’m helping to facilitate the Computer Science “S4” (another term for community of practice - or faculty learning community? I can’t keep track…) which brings together CS teachers from all across the anglo cegeps in Quebec. Finally, I’m recording a podcast with my friend, teacher, and colleague, Maggie McDonnell from Concordia University where we chat with our fellow post-secondary educators on topics like the current political situation in Quebec, managing workload and burnout, and of course, generative AI in the classroom.

I’m winding down a pretty heavy semester teaching Application Development III which is a third year course where students learn how to make cross-platform (think iOS and Android) apps. New preps are always way more work than courses you’ve taught before. I’m also on several course committees at the university to look at all our courses in the MTP and see how AI helps or hinders learning. I’m looking forward to several pedagogical sharing days coming up, including SALTISE, of which I’ll be a fellow next year. One of the things I’ll be presenting is my new SCRIPT Framework for outlining AI usage in college courses - I think it’s quite useful!

I just got back from an amazing family vacation in Ireland!

This was on the back of finally finishing my master’s research and also getting to teach in the very same program which was a very cool experience. Teaching students is one thing, but teaching teachers is something else altogether - phew!

I’m helping teachers with educational technology through my role as Faculty Resource Person at John Abbott College for the Winter 2025 semester.

I’m also in the research phase of my Master’s of Education degree at the University of Sherbrooke. My research topic is improving computer science students’ motivation to provide quality peer code review through game-based learning. I collected my data last semester by having my students play a card game I designed where their initial hand is determined by the quality of peer feedback they gave in the last assignment. The first time they played the game, they were unaware as to why their peers had different cards than them. The second time they played the game, they were aware, and my job now is to compare the feedback from the first round to the second round, as see if the game had any impact on the quality of feedback. Now I’m crunching the numbers and writing up the final thesis to hopefully submit by the end of this semester!

Finally, I got tired of endlessly exporting/importing grades between platforms. So, instead of actually grading, I created a bookmarklet that makes it easier to extract grades from Moodle and copy them into Lea’s “Import Results” page. You can find it here.
